I needed to take a break and draw something loose.
Apparently train rides to NYC are what bring out the superhero costume redesigner in me. Also, given the choice I think I always want to draw Guy Gardner a little messed up but I usually hold back so that it doesn’t turn into a thing.
Chris Haley, stop telling me to draw Prime. What is your deal? Calm down.
P.S. Apparently I deal with insanity and a city full of bombs by drawing my male artist friends in compromising positions.
My friend Andrew said I should draw the rest of the Jonny Quest cast. That’s pretty much all the convincing it took.
I was recently at the museum in the Old State House in Boston (because that is the sort of madcap insanity I get into on my birthday) and was enamored with the old cartoons they had up on display- particularly the style of word balloons from the 1700’s. They were fairly illegible but I like how it looks like words trapped in breath.
There were no sexy cafe dudes today so I had to work on other things. Man, I had such a crush on Race Bannon as a kid- but not from The New Adventures of Jonny Quest. That show was HORRIBLE.
I was watching Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated and got to the episode that had a very brief Jonny Quest crossover that lead to the much larger Dynomutt crossover. I’m 90% certain that’s what lead to this drawing. Although, going back- how great was that episode? The interpretation of Blue Falcon as a Dark Knight Returns style brooding, angry, violent superhero, having the villain reveal at the end be DOCTOR ZIN (as if that means anything to the kids that watch it), uh Race Bannon is in it?
Houdini was usually my go-to in elementary and middle school when we had to do a book report on a biography. I was only recently reminded that he’s THE BEST. Tomorrow I’m going down to Porter Square books and picking up a copy of “The Secret Life of Houdini”.
Listen, it’s not an obsession. You shut your face. I’m going to bed. It’s 5:30.
THIS- this is for Brian Clevinger. I think the combination of spending (most of) my time in a land without internet, working on Real Science Adventures and the complete and utter lack of sleep this weekend led to this.
I drew this on the bus ride from NYC to Boston since it was too shaky and jerky to for me to do real work. Now that I’m somewhat rested and have eaten and have been able to catch up on tumblr this piece seems really silly but what’s done is done. Nikola Tesla/Harry Houdini 4 lyfe.
P.S. Chris Sims thinks the nickname for the new power couple should be “Houla”. SO, TUMBLR. NEW FANDOM? EH? EH?
P.P.S. I know that doesn’t really look much like Houdini. It’s my version of Gurihiru’s version from the first Real Science Adventures.
The Hawkeye Test: “If your female character can be replaced by Hawkeye in the same pose without looking silly or stupid, then it’s acceptable and probably non sexist. If you can’t, then just forget about it.”
I know I’m a little late on The Hawkeye Initiative, but whatever! I wanted to do one anyway. My favorite part of the original is than an archer has decided that stabbing someone with an arrow is somehow a better attack than shooting an arrow. Also, is that guy trying to grab his sword by the blade instead of just tossing off the girl who weighs AT LEAST 100 lbs less than him?
